VMEbus: Modularity for Safety-Critical Requirements

Besides state-of-the-art PC functions, MEN's VMEbus CPU boards also feature industrial functions such as real-time clock, or watchdogs for temperature and voltage control and have been developed to work in rugged environments. Based on different performance levels on PowerPC® and Intel® architectures they can also be designed for the extremely high demands of safety-critical applications, e.g., in avionics or railways.

MEN VMEbus solutions are completed by a huge range of industrial I/O boards. Via plug-in slots on most CPU boards different M-Module™, PMC or XMC mezzanines can be implemented very easily and offer nearly unlimited flexibility. A growing number of boards are equipped with FPGAs for implementation of further application-specific functions.

Two good examples of our rugged and flexible VMEbus SBCs are the A602 and the A20.

The fault-tolerant A602 comes with triple-redundancy architecture on board, was designed according to DO-254 and EN 50129, and can be certified up to DAL-A or SIL 4. Its complex FPGA-based design helps dramatically lower software development costs as it automatically manages the system's triple-redundant processors and memory.

Designed for industrial applications with the highest reliability in computing and graphics the A20 is used in the world's largest particle accelerator of the Swiss research organization CERN. The robust card supports a multitude of Intel® processors and provides space for two PMC or XMC modules.
