MTCS Update: Middleware PACY for Safe Communication

BLUE BELL, Pa. July 2016 - The MTCS Modular Train Control System from MEN is an open computer platform for automated train control and protection. The central key element of this open architecture is the PACY middleware developed by MEN. It handles the communication between the application software and the safe I/O cards, which are also part of the MTCS family.

In contrast to existing solutions that use a fixed, inflexible hardware/software configuration, the MEN Modular Train Control System opens up essential interfaces between the control electronics and user applications. The software architecture of the MTCS system's CPU computer isolates safe and “unsafe” domains in order to save cost and time for application development and certification.

The PACY middleware handles the communication between the CPU together with custom-specific application software and the safe I/O cards. Being a transparent abstraction layer PACY takes care of the execution of the application’s commands – independent of the I/Os that need to be controlled.

The FSOE protocol (Safety over EtherCAT) integrated in PACY is responsible for the safe data transmission and protection of what is called the Black Channel.

PACY can be termed a module-based framework and as such opens up all interfaces. This allows on the one hand a flexible extension by individual, custom-specific modules and on the other hand the communication with any C application.

In addition to separate SIL 4 certificates for the safe CPU card F75P and the safe QNX operating system, a SIL 4 certification according to EN 50128 will also be available for PACY, including the corresponding documents. Further information will be given at the coming InnoTrans.

MTCS offers a modular solution for rolling stock and wayside control systems, already certified to SIL 4 in all its components – hardware, software and middleware.
