Advanced Train Management System
ATMS is designed to support the objectives of the Australian Rail Track Corporation, improving rail network capacity, operational flexibility, train service availability, transit times, rail safety and system reliability. It will provide the rail industry of Australia with significantly upgraded capabilities.
The new nationwide system includes functions like provision of the precise location of trains both front and rear, provision of switch settings and automatic route clearances, replacement of trackside signaling with in-locomotive displays of authorities to drivers
and enforcement of authorities on each locomotive if a train is at risk of exceeding its authority.
The safety-critical computer system which partitions the vital and non-vital applications in one single platform is built to a high degree with standard COTS products. It is based on a CompactPCI - CompactPCI Serial hybrid configuration and is certifiable up to SIL 4. The critical part runs on the VxWorks CERT safe operating system and consists of one or two D602 safe computers, designed for deterministic operation and offering extensive BITE features. The three PowerPC processors run in lockstep mode with 2oo3 voting implemented in FPGA and software-assisted resynchronization, while its triple-redundant dynamic memory automatically corrects hardware faults. Ethernet is integrated via a P511 PMC, binary I/O is added using the M66 M-Module. The non-critical part of the system consists of two F19P Intel Core CompactPCI PlusIO SBCs, connecting to a CompactPCI Ethernet switch, four CompactPCI Serial hard disk shuttles with 500 GB SATA HDDs each, and running Linux.

Standard Components Used in this Example
The D602 is a fail-operational, fault-tolerant vital embedded computer, certifiable up to SIL 4 and DAL-A, with onboard triple redundancy for functional safety and availability. It targets safety-critical applications in embedded aircraft computer systems, railway and wayside computers and industrial automation.
The F19P versatile 4HP/3U single-board computer is compatible to the CompactPCI PlusIO standard and equipped with the Intel Core 2 Duo processor SP9300.
The F301 is an unmanaged 3U Fast Ethernet switch module with a maximum of 8 channels at the front panel (8 RJ45 or 6 D-Sub connectors) and an integrated Fast Ethernet controller.
The G501 is a CompactPCI Serial hard disk drive carrier board designed to carry a 2.5" SATA hard disk drive or a solid state drive.
The M66 is an M-Module with 32 inputs or 32 outputs or mixed I/O in groups of 4. It is designed for industrial automation, medical computers, in-vehicle computers, and embedded computers in transportation.
The P511 is a dual Ethernet USM-based mezzanine PMC supporting an FPGA MAC layer and six additional GPIOS.
