Permanent Train Positioning
Exact positioning of the train down to the track offers crucial advantages regarding track utilization, waiting times and power consumption.
The solution for this application is based on an individually configured version of a standard embedded box PC. Equipped with two antennas, the box receives GPS data sent from several satellites and forwards them to the control center via UMTS, where the position and the current speed are calculated. Due to differentiated GPS, a location accuracy of less than 3 meters can be provided, which means that the exact track can be determined. Equipped with an odometer implemented via a PCI Express Mini Card, the system supports dead reckoning functionality. This ensures that the exact position of a vehicle can be identified, even if the satellite signal is interrupted, for example while moving through a tunnel.
The box PC can be further expanded by Wi-Fi, MVB and serial interfaces. Using conduction cooling it can operate in a temperature range of -40 to +85°C and complies with the EN 50155 railway standard.
Standard Components Used in this Example
The BL50W is a rugged, fanless EN 50155 railway and E-Mark automotive box computer, based on an AMD dual-core T48N. It is used as railway communication and management computer, and - thanks to its built-in multitude of wireless interfaces - as passenger information and internet access system for public transportation.
